Forbidden baby Foods to AvoiD ....

Some Common Foods That Should Wait to be Introduced to Baby
Until Baby has Reached a Certain Age

There are many "forbidden foods" that baby should not have until he has reached a certain age. These forbidden baby foods include egg whites, peanut butter, shellfish, crustaceans and citrus

Honey (not an allergen but may cause botulism in infants under 1yr old) After 1 year

Peanut Butter After 1 or 2 years*

(Tree) Nuts(also may pose a choking hazard) After 1 or 2 years*

Citrus or Acidic Fruits Not an allergen but may cause rash & digestive upset due to acidity. Using a dash of lemon or pineapple juice in a whole fruit puree is NOT the same as giving a baby pureed or sliced oranges, pineapple et al.just because a fruit, like tomato, is not in the citrus family does not mean that it is not acidic. After 1 year

Raw Strawberries, Raspberries, Blackberries - (Blueberries and Cranberries are NOT included in this) After 1 year**

Corn (possible allergen and not very nutrient rich) After 1 year

Egg Whites(many pediatricians will say it is fine for an older infant to have baked goods that include whole eggs) After 1 year

Whole Milk - as a drinkLactose and milk proteins may cause allergic reactions and may also cause tummy troubles as they are hard to digest - yogurt and cheese are exceptions. Milk also hinders proper absorption of iron; iron is crucial during the 1st yr.. After 1 year

Wheat Many suggest that for the infant who has had no issues with gluten in Oats and/or Barley, and who has no history of wheat allergy or gluten intolerance, that offering wheat products (such as wheat toast) is fine around 8+ months After 9-10 months or 1 year

Grapes(not a high allergen but may pose a choking hazard - use extreme caution if offering your older infant or toddler grapes) After 10 months or 1 year **

Chocolate After 1 year - if at all

Many foods listed should not be given until a certain age due to possible health issues:

Honey for example, could prompt infant botulism due to the immaturity of a baby's intestinal tract.
Whole milk should not be introduced as a replacement for breast milk or formula until after 12 months. This recommendation is due to the fact that whole cow milk cannot properly sustain a growing infant. It simply does not have all the nutritional components needed for healthy growth and development. There is also a bit of difficulty in the digestion of whole milk proteins. Yogurt and cheese are cultured and thus tend to be more easily digested.
Citrus is very acidic and many infants under the age of 12 months old suffer rashes and tummy upsets due to the acidity. This has nothing to do with allergies.
Strawberries and Shell Fish, and even Peanuts, can prompt severe, life threatening allergic reactions.

Broccoli for example is known to cause gas in many people. Offering broccoli to an infant who is 6 months of age is really not a good idea. You would not want offer a 6 month old baby Beans either, as these too may cause painful gas.

Peanuts and Tree Nuts have varied age recommendations for introduction. Typical ages for introduction are:
After One (1) Year for the Non Food Sensitive/Non-Allergic Child;
After Two (2) or Three (3) Years for the Food Sensitive/Allergic Child.
Some Medical Authorities even suggest holding off Peanuts and Tree Nuts until after Seven (7) Years old. You should introduce these items with the consultation and recommendation of your baby's Pediatrician.

** Strawberries Please note that the current recommendation for introducing strawberries is after a baby has reached 12 months of age. Commercial Stage 2 baby foods contain strawberries because it is said that processing strawberries at such a high temperature "kills" the protein that causes the allergic response.
** Grapes are not a high allergen but may pose choking hazards.

How Will You Know When Your Baby is Ready to Eat Solid Foods?
How do you know if your baby is ready for solid foods? Your baby may be 3 months old or 4 months old when you start to feel she may need "something more" than formula or breast milk. Maybe she is beginning to awaken more often at night or eat more often than "usual" and you wonder if introducing solid foods may be what she needs.

A Growth Spurt May be Confused with a Readiness for Solid Foods

Please keep in mind that a growth spurt will occur between 3-4 months of age. Your baby may begin to wake more frequently at night for a feeding and/or may begin to eat non-stop (cluster feed) as she once did as a newborn. This growth spurt often accounts for the increased hunger in your baby and it should not be taken as a sign that your baby needs solid foods added to her diet.

Try offering your baby more frequent nursing sessions and/or bottle feedings instead of solids; you will find that within a week or two, your baby is oftentimes over the growth spurt and back to feeding "as usual".

Here are a few "signs" that may indicate your baby is ready for Solid Foods:

Loss of tongue-thrust reflex - This allows baby to drink and swallow liquids with ease; with the tongue-thrust reflex still present, baby may simply drink in liquid purees or push the food back out. In the first four months the tongue thrust reflex protects the infant against choking. When any unusual substance is placed on the tongue, it automatically protrudes outward rather than back. Between four and six months this reflex gradually diminishes, giving the glob of cereal a fighting chance of making it from the tongue to the tummy

Ability to let you know she is full from a "meal" with signs such as turning away from the bottle or breast. This is important so that baby is able to self-regulate the amount of food being eaten. This helps stop baby from accidentally overeating as parents may continue to feed baby thinking that she is still hungry.

Ability to sit up and hold head up unassisted

Interest in your food (we tend to disagree with this one as when a baby reaches the age of 4-6 months, he is interested in putting everything in his mouth.)

Doubling of birth weight

Frequently waking in the middle of the night when a solid sleeping pattern had been established. This may not be the best indicator that your baby is ready for solids. Please keep in mind that a growth spurt will occur between 3-4 months of age, 6-7 months of age and also 9-10 months of age. Baby may also be waking due to an illness or teething.
